Ferry service and waterfront transportation in San Diego

Explore bay cruises along with new transit options

San Diego's waterfront is experiencing a significant transformation with the introduction of a new ferry service connecting Chula Vista to downtown San Diego. This initiative aims to enhance waterfront transportation and provide residents and visitors with more convenient bay cruises.

Starting June 1, 2026, Flagship Cruises & Events will operate daily ferry services between Safe Harbor South Bay in Chula Vista and Fifth Avenue Landing in downtown San Diego. The 45-minute crossings are scheduled every two hours, beginning at 8 a.m. from Chula Vista, with the final departure from downtown at 7 p.m. One-way fares are set at $15 per passenger. The vessel, accommodating up to 32 passengers, offers a comfortable ride across the bay.

Brad Engel, president of Flagship Cruises & Events, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, stating that it creates another unique and enjoyable way to experience San Diego Bay while improving connectivity between Chula Vista and downtown San Diego. He also mentioned plans to expand the service and add additional trips in the future.

This ferry service is part of a broader effort to enhance waterfront transportation options in the region. The Port of San Diego has been actively working on the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, which includes developments like the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center and Sweetwater Park. These projects aim to create a world-class destination in the South Bay, offering new public parks, recreational opportunities, and improved natural habitats.

In National City, the Port has completed the Pepper Park Phase 1 Improvements Project, introducing amenities such as a new splash pad, pirate-themed playground, and additional picnic areas. These enhancements are designed to provide residents and visitors with more recreational options along the waterfront.

The introduction of the Chula Vista ferry service, coupled with ongoing waterfront developments, signifies a commitment to improving waterfront transportation and enhancing the overall experience of San Diego Bay. Residents and visitors can look forward to more accessible and enjoyable bay cruises and waterfront activities in the near future.
