Highlighting the journey from spelling bee champion to spelling bee San Diego |
San Diego's own Benjamin Reinhard, an eighth-grader at Maranatha Christian School in Del Sur, is representing the city at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee. He is among 247 contestants nationwide competing in Washington, D.C., with the event commencing on May 26.
Benjamin earned his spot by clinching victory at the San Diego County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee in March, where he correctly spelled "kenosis" to secure the title. His journey underscores the city's rich tradition in the competition, having produced two national champions in the past.
The preliminary and quarterfinal rounds are scheduled for May 26 and 27, respectively, and will be broadcast on the Scripps Sports Network. The semifinals and finals will air on ION on May 27 and 28, with Emmy Award-winning analyst Mina Kimes hosting the event.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee has returned to Washington, D.C., after years in Maryland, marking a significant moment for the competition. This year's event features a refreshed broadcast vision, aiming to enhance the viewing experience and highlight the dedication of these young spellers.
San Diego continues to foster a strong spelling bee culture, with local events and support systems that prepare students like Benjamin for national stages. The community eagerly anticipates his performance and hopes to add another champion to its history. |
