Street sweeping services and improvements in San Diego

Starting this Wednesday, San Diego's Stormwater Department will enhance street sweeping services in Mission Beach to address the surge in tourist activity during the summer months.

 

The increased cleanings, scheduled every Wednesday through September, aim to prevent trash and debris from entering the ocean and Mission Bay.

 

Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell, representing Mission Beach, expressed gratitude for the department's efforts to maintain cleanliness during the busy season.

 

She emphasized that these additional routes will help keep streets free of litter and reduce fly infestations, enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

 

The department will deploy specialized equipment to sweep main roads and nearly every alley in both North and South Mission Beach.

 

Todd Snyder, director of the Stormwater Department, highlighted that street sweeping is a crucial measure to protect neighborhoods and reduce ocean pollution.

 

By implementing weekly sweeps in Mission Beach, the city aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy the area's exceptional beaches and bays throughout the summer.

 

Residents and visitors are encouraged to adhere to posted parking signs and assist by disposing of trash in designated collection bins.

 

Additionally, they can report illegal dumping through the city's Get It Done app.

 

It's important to note that rainfall entering storm drains is untreated, carrying pollutants from streets into local waterways.

 

Street sweeping effectively removes both large debris and microscopic pollutants, such as brake dust from vehicles, before they reach storm drains.

 

These particles can be extremely harmful to fish and other wildlife.

 

In a related effort, San Diego's Environmental Services Department will double trash collection services from May 30 to September 5.

 

During this period, refuse will be collected on Saturdays in addition to the usual Tuesdays.

 

Organic waste and recyclables will continue their regular once-a-week collection schedule.

 

These initiatives reflect the city's commitment to maintaining cleanliness and environmental health during the peak tourist season.
