Louis Rose stands as a key figure in San Diego’s history, though remains an unsung pioneer to many locals.

Arriving from Germany in 1850, Rose became the city’s first Jewish settler and an early champion of its growth.

He established the region’s first tannery in Rose Canyon and ambitiously founded Roseville on Point Loma, envisioning it as a thriving port.

Rose’s ventures and civic leadership shaped the city’s future, especially during the financial crises of the 1860s.

He served on pivotal local governing boards, and his guidance helped safeguard San Diego’s stability and future.

As a leader of the Jewish community, Rose hosted religious gatherings, contributed the first Jewish cemetery land, and helped found Congregation Beth Israel.

His dedication ensured a lasting cultural and civic legacy throughout the city.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is celebrating the arrival of three bat-eared fox kits, the first offspring for mother Winter and father Teddy.

These playful kits are starting to explore outside their den, giving park visitors a rare look at their earliest days.

Known for their gigantic ears reaching over five inches, bat-eared foxes hail from Africa and use their striking ears for both keen hearing and cooling down.

In nature, these foxes thrive on insects—especially termites—while at the park, the young kits are enthusiastically devouring mealworms as they try solid foods.

Both Winter and Teddy are devoted parents, with Teddy stepping up in his new role to safeguard the family while Winter attends to their needs.

Guests can spot the growing family in Nairobi Village, where the kits gradually learn foraging from their attentive parents.

The pleasant, partly sunny weather around 68°F adds to the perfect chance to see these adorable newcomers in action.

The City of Escondido is partnering with The Rinks Foundation to bring a state-of-the-art community ice facility to Kit Carson Park, aiming to rejuvenate local passion for ice sports and serve residents of every age.

The planned center will include three ice rinks—one with up to 3,000 spectator seats—plus a restaurant, training spaces, and competition venues.

Activities will range from youth and adult hockey to figure skating, sled hockey, public skating, and curling.

As a major draw, the San Diego Gulls AHL team will use the facility for practice, along with hosting the Jr. Gulls and high school teams.

The Rinks Foundation, founded by philanthropists Henry and Susan Samueli, will fully fund and build the project, ensuring all proceeds support local ice sports growth.

City officials and residents will review the proposal and share input through public meetings and online platforms in June.

If approved, Escondido will gain a new hub for recreation, accessibility, and economic growth.
